What is
"Alberta Harvest"?Alberta Harvest is a chapter of the Harvest
food charity. The Harvest concept is very simple, we move food
from people who have too much to those who have too little.
Our sole mission is to collect surplus food from restaurants, grocery
stores, and other food producers and immediately deliver it to missions,
shelters, soup kitchens and even the food bank. Alberta Harvest is different
from many charitable organizations, in that we are not fund raisers or a
food bank, rather we are food raisers and coordinators. We do not
store any food or money. All food that is collected is immediately
delivered to organizations in need. No one in the
organization is remunerated. In fact, Alberta Harvest can not
accept any cash - we can only accept food and volunteered services to
collect and deliver food - period.
How did
"Alberta Harvest" get started?
Richard Wright, Chairman of Alberta Harvest, established Canada's first
Harvest chapter in April of 2005.
Richard hopes that existing smaller groups that are already doing
similar work will join forces with Alberta Harvest to improve the
overall effectiveness of food delivery to missions and shelters.
We are initially starting to collect and deliver food in the Edmonton
area, with plans to expand throughout the province. Due to several
differences between the USA and Canada's social, charity, and food bank
systems, we also are planning to develop operations and practices that
will most appropriately meet Alberta and ultimately Canadian food needs.
Which we can then share with and foster other Canadian chapters of
Harvest to help eliminate hunger.
The first "Harvest" chapter was established in the United States in
1987 by Stan Curtis of Louisville Kentucky. Check out the USA
Harvest chapters website to learn more about the origins and many successes in the
fight against hunger. (www.usaharvest.com)

toured Hope Mission and worked with Alberta Harvest's Richard Wright

served food to hundreds of needy people. It was a wonderful day with
Hilary answering questions to radio and Television stations. In
addition she freely gave time to be with the children at Hope Mission.
